Piece-count guide
A 1,000-piece puzzle contains twice as many pieces as a 500-piece puzzle, but that does not make it exactly twice as large, twice as difficult or twice as slow. The exact edition, artwork and space you have matter more than the number alone.

You want a longer search-and-placement process and are comfortable managing more loose pieces and partially built sections.
Confirm the exact finished dimensions and inspect the image for repeated colors, fine detail and large low-information areas.
If both counts are available for the same artwork, do not assume they are physically identical apart from the number of pieces. A different cut, piece size, box, production run or finished footprint may make each count a distinct edition.
Piece count is a useful starting point because it changes how many items you must inspect, sort, compare and place. Moving from 500 to 1,000 pieces creates more candidate pieces and usually more unfinished sections to organize at once.
It is not a complete difficulty scale. Two puzzles with the same count can feel very different, and a visually clear 1,000-piece image can offer more usable clues than a repetitive 500-piece image. Cut style, piece size, image composition, color separation and the accuracy of the reference image all affect the solve.
Avoid the “twice as hard” shortcut. Doubling the number of pieces is an exact statement about count. It is not an exact statement about difficulty or completion time.
Piece count does not tell you whether a puzzle fits your table or board. Manufacturers choose different piece sizes and aspect ratios, and some product lines publish the same nominal completed footprint for more than one count. Panoramic, square, round and shaped puzzles make count an even weaker shortcut for size.

Before choosing, look at where the image gives you reliable clues. Distinct objects, lettering, borders and separated color regions make it easier to assign a piece to a part of the picture. Repeated windows, foliage, fur, waves or nearly uniform sky offer fewer unique visual anchors.
These features do not create a universal rating: different solvers use different strategies. They do explain why count alone cannot predict the experience. Consider:
A responsible comparison cannot attach a universal number of hours to either count. Completion time changes with the image, cut, solver experience, sorting method, interruptions and whether one person or a group is working.
A more practical question is how you want the project to fit into your routine. With 500 pieces, there are fewer loose pieces to inspect and store between sessions. With 1,000, sorting categories and unfinished sections can occupy more of the surface even when the completed footprint is similar.
If the puzzle must be moved, measure the storage board or case as well as the table. The completed image may fit while the in-progress solve, loose pieces and sorting containers do not.
Exclude table lips, rounded corners and any area that must remain available for other uses.
Do this for each edition under consideration; do not infer size from 500 or 1,000 on the box.
Look for unique visual anchors, repeated textures, subtle gradients and large areas with few clues.
Consider sorting space, storage between sessions and whether several people will share the puzzle.
